One of the things that I observed when first introduced to the music department at Covenant and that remains fundamentally true of our program is the camaraderie that permeates our work and relationships. The students, staff, and faculty genuinely love each other, and we seek to encourage and support the work to which each of us has been called. This stands in stark contrast to the cutthroat competition that characterizes much of the musical culture. While we acknowledge that we all have been given different abilities and have developed those abilities to differing degrees, this always has the ultimate purpose of celebrating the abilities of others and promoting better stewardship of our own. A degree of competition can be motivating, and we are keenly aware that faithfully responding to our callings as musicians may require demonstrations of our gifts; however, our default posture is oriented toward building others up for the greater goal of glorifying God together with the gifts He has given.
